Popular neighboring restaurants team up with United Way to raise over $7,000 for FAU College of Education through ‘Give-a-Thon’ event

(BOCA RATON, Fla.) May 12, 2014 – Kapow Noodle Bar ( and the Dubliner Irish Pub ( held an onsite fundraiser, Tuesday, as part of United Way’s “Great Give” online campaign. Together, they raised $7,325 for FAU’s College of Education, which United Way is matching up to 30% bring the total to approximately $10,000.

The Great Give is an online 24-hour giving event led by the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, United Way of Palm Beach County, Martin County Community Foundation and United Way of Martin County. The program is designed to raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits in a single day.

“When we were presented with the opportunity to be part of the United Way Great Give charity event I felt like we really needed to get involved,” Scott Frielich, owner of the Dubliner Irish Pub, states. “Three very important issues, education, income and health, are something we wanted to get behind, and working with the United Way enabled us to support these causes.”

Kapow and Dubliner went above and beyond Great Give’s online initiatives to host an onsite event during the give-a-thon in an effort to maximize donations. The neighboring restaurants served “GIVEtinis” for $10; donating $5 from each GIVEtini sold. Customers were also able to make onsite donations to the cause.

Sitting on the university’s College of Education Advisory Board, Kapow Co-Founder, Vaughan Lazar didn’t think twice about which cause to get behind. “We’re grateful for United Way’s generosity and the opportunity to support local education. United Way’s commitment to bettering the community was a perfect fit with our community driven ethos,” Lazar states. “This amazing community gives us life 365 days a year. So it just made sense to partner with United Way in giving back to the community. Thank you to everyone for their support.”

The charitable stars of the night were John and Jim Greer, co-owners of Gold Coast Schools. The twin brothers donated $5,000 on behalf of their real estate school. Subculture Restaurant Group (Kapow and the Dubliner) also donated $1,000. The remaining $1,325 was raised through the restaurants’ sale of GIVEtinis.

“This was an incredible opportunity to partner with amazing stewards of the community,” Sheriann Namer, director of development and outreach for FAU’s College of Education, states. “Not only have we increased awareness for the College of Education, we raised much needed funds for student scholarships. We are grateful for everyone who participated.”

In only one day, United Way’s 2014 Great Give campaign in Martin and Palm Beach counties raised more than $1.9 million for local charities. “Great Give was a great big success because of the community support of local media and businesses,” Alexia Savage, vice president of marketing and brand management for United Way of Palm Beach County, explains. “The event hosted by Kapow and Dubliner helped increase awareness in south county and generate donations as well as social media reach. United Way and Community Foundation are so grateful for their generosity.”
